My students have special needs. They are ESE students that have a variety of academic and behavioral challenges that they face every day when they enter the classroom. The majority of my students also face other challenges as their families are in financial hardships as well. 75% of my students take home food for their families every Friday in bags on the bus and receive free meals at breakfast and lunch. My students are not your typical "wired-in" kids because they have little to no technology at home. They appreciate everything I do with them and share with them. The best way I have found to reach out to them and keep them engaged is by manipulating objects and interacting with materials that show them what I am trying to teach them. Then they can practice with the materials to master concepts. Their parents know the importance of literacy, but don't always know how to help them.
