Students can be easily distracted when their environment is filled with clutter. Organization is a key to success- a tidy desk can improve focus and empower students to stay in control of their learning. Having 32 students in my classroom is challenging when it comes to a set-up that is conducive to learning for all. In order to fit 32 desks, a kidney table, a couple of bookshelves, and a teacher's desk, I have had to place students in groups and do not have much room for extra tables (which were previously used as community storage) to place around the perimeter of the room. Especially with the pandemic, student materials are to be kept separated and not stored in one big bin. This means that each student has to house all their books, notebooks, headphones, pencil boxes, and water bottles in and on top of their desks. The result: overstuffed desks and cluttered desktops. Decluttering students' desks will not only lead to improved organizational skills, which students need to succeed but will also lead to an increased focus on what really matters- academics. A storage unit will provide necessary individualized space for each student (to store books and headphones) and declutter desktops and the insides of desks. The storage unit will not be as wide as some tables, providing ample space for walking and getting around the classroom. Please help my students learn how to be organized and focus on academics and not what's on top of their desks.
