The ALAS Academy is a pilot project in an inner-city public elementary school. Our mission is to create a small academy-style middle school program within a larger public elementary school. Our scholars face many challenges in life, including poverty and an unsafe neighborhood. Nevertheless, the efforts of the scholars, families, and staff have resulted in our school being named a Distinguished School for 2014. The ALAS scholars are inquisitive, inventive, and self-motivated learners. This year, our scholars completed the Intro to Computer Programming course through Code.org. Their efforts earned the $1000 grant that will partially fund this project. It was inspiring to watch the students work together to help each other succeed with this challenging course.
