Imagine presenting a business proposal to a major corporation with a broken projector, dried-up markers, a filthy board, and poorly bound information packets. Not likely to close the deal, right? This is the dilemma we are facing, with more far-reaching consequences. After years of consistently poor academic performance, this particular New York inner-city school has been shut down and is being replaced by three newer schools within the same building. The kids, however, will be the same. Many of them retain the sense of academic and social insecurity, coupled with low expectations of themselves and of the school system. As a third grade teacher in the largest of the three schools, my job is even more paramount, because this is the first year they will be taking state exams. I plan to give them my all, but I need your help.
