My students are 4th graders at a large charter school just a few miles north of the Mexico/California border. Most of my students come from low income households and two-thirds of my students are English Learners. According to current research, "Only one-third of all students entering high school are proficient in reading -- only about 15 percent of African American students, and 17 percent of Hispanic students" (NAEP Reading_2009). I am determined to raise this percentage, beginning with my class of fourth graders. I am dedicated to instilling a love for reading in each and every one of my students by introducing them to various types of literature, enriching them through thoughtful book discussions and providing them with engaging reading lessons and an enjoyable reading environment.
