My English Language Learners come from all over our school district and from all over the world. They and their families are here as official refugees or have come to seek a better life, free from crime and poverty. My students are learning English, as well as all of the regular middle school subjects, in a program for newcomer English language learners. My students have additional challenges - besides learning English, most have interrupted formal education and thus have significant work ahead of them to catch up academically with their same-age peers.
