My students are bright eyed in the middle of a big city that threatens to outshine them. They're all PreAP and AP students who are desperately trying to climb above their circumstances. Many of them come from families that are first generation immigrants, and some of them will be the first in their families to graduate from college (and in some cases, high school). They're funny, smart, talented, and involved in several extracurricular activities each. They're patient, and kind, and curious, and all they want is for someone, somewhere, to notice that they're trying their best. I've tried my best to give them a classroom that is comfortable and inviting, but that's a difficult project in and of itself: our school is old (over fifty years) and not well maintained. As part of a large district, we very often don't get the attention that we deserve. My students deserve a space that shows them that they're above their circumstances.
