Though I want to grow my students in their reading ability, I want to do that while exposing them to different races, cultures, and genres of writing. My school is primarily white, and the majority of the books my students read include white characters and authors. I want to expand that and help my students select engaging, interesting books that allow them to expand their own worlds. My current classroom library is small and lacks diversity, both in race and genre. My hope is that an expanded classroom library will get my reluctant readers to read (graphic novels are great for them!), teach my students about other races and cultures, and give my diverse students the opportunity to see themselves in what they read.
