For students to be successful in school, they must know all the letters of the alphabet and all the sounds that each letter represents. This seemingly simple idea is often incredibly difficult for the students in my class. My students come from several countries around the world and speak several different languages. Some of them have seen the alphabet that we use in the United States, while others have not because they come from countries that do not use the same alphabet. Regardless, the sounds that we use in the United States are very different from the sounds that they use in their native languages. Teaching students at such varying language levels can be difficult. My students would benefit from having a Rugs alive alphabet rug and a tablet to make it come alive. The tablet application would provide audio and visual support in the alphabet learning process for all the English language learners that I serve.
