I teach 7th, 8th and 9th grade mathematics at a pre-k to 12 school. There are about 400 students total. The most wonderful thing about a small school is the fact that I have the privilege of having them for at least 3 years. I also teach a math, science and technology class. This is where most of the materials are needed. It used to be a bridge-building class. Now, we are branching out into what the kids and I want it to be. They are interesting in so many different things- how to create a container that will withstand an egg drop from the second floor, how to test the strength of a single sheet of paper (we got it to 185 pounds), what is a fractal and where do we see them, use them, what is solar energy, where do I see math in nature? These are just a few projects. The unfortunate thing is that there is absolutely no funding for such projects. I am buying as much as I am able by myself and students help when they can, but it is a financially poor district.
