My students are amazing and inspiring. They are creative and curious, genuine and hilarious. To some, they may also be surprising. Surprising because most are coming from low-income backgrounds and going to college as the first in their families to do so. Surprising because they will be silly at one moment and then in the next, blow your mind with an insight that can reframe an entire discussion. And they love theatre. They don't realize it at first, not until they get into it, do that first scene. Get past the eye roll at a character named Gwendolen or Beneatha and the knee-jerk reaction to a whole page of words: "I have to memorize this?" Get up on stage and do something they thought a month ago was impossible. Then they're hooked. Some of them, for a lifetime. The school itself is also a paradox. It is a beautiful place to learn (drawing comparisons to Hogwarts), yet it lags far behind even other city schools in its technology. Projectors, common elsewhere, are a luxury here.
