Our students are funny, intelligent, and quirky. Their strongest assets are their imagination and creativity. They love to integrate math and science in comic strips, screen plays, short stories, and poems. When asked to do a word problem, they draw out the stories based on their imagination. When doing science, they act, sing, and rap in order to remember and understand the concepts. Their imagination is their way of sense making. They come from a school in which 73% of students have free or reduced lunch and therefore, money for supplies are usually allocated to getting books and hiring teachers. Regardless, we have made good use of what we have. Students use recycled paper in place of lined paper, markers and color pencils in place of pencils and pens, and advertising posters in place of construction paper to draw on.
