My students come from an extremely low socio-economic section of the Bronx, where 100% of our students are entitled to free breakfast and lunch. When we go on class trips, they get excited just to see the hair salon, which one refers to as "the hair supermarket." They have relatively no life experiences and have never held an iPad in their lives. Our school does not have any Smart boards, and our use of technology is limited. I purchased a subscription Online for leveled books on "Raz-Kids" and would like to split my class into sections to use iPads as readers, searching information, as well as a behavioral reinforcer. My students have a wide range of disabilities and technology allows them to not only remain interested in learning, it provides the sensory input they desperately seek. iPads are a great way to reduce the amount of off-task behaviors, while increasing their time on task, and peak their interest in learning.
