SF International High School is a small specialty public (not charter) high school that serves newcomer immigrant students. In my 11th grade American Literature classroom you'll see students who arrived in the US six months ago and are just learning to to ask for the bathroom in English, alongside other students who have been here 3-4 years and are almost ready for UC Berkeley. It's a huge range of English levels. They come from Honduras, China, El Salvador, Philippines, Yemen, Vietnam, and beyond. Whatever their background, we serve them--in the same classroom. Literature circles are a key feature of my classroom -- basically these are highly structured book clubs, where small groups of students who are at similar reading levels choose a book to read for homework and discuss in class. Finding enough books that are interesting and at an appropriate level is a huge challenge!
