My classroom is in a Texas school district where the classroom demographics are 100% Hispanic, all of which come from low income homes. The primary and often only spoken language at home is Spanish. For this reason it is much easier for my students to learn the basics of reading in their native language. We encourage students to read at home, unfortunately because our students come from low income homes most have no books. This is the first year my campus has bilingual students so we don't have a bilingual book room or enough books for guided reading groups. They all enjoy story time. They are always engaged with their reading material. They love books, but unfortunately we do not have enough in Spanish for them to take home.
