I teach at a predominantly Black and Latino, Title I school in the Northwest suburbs of Atlanta. With these populations, people have come to expect low achievement and behavior problems. In my current position, teaching 11th grade American Literature, I can tell you from experience that nothing could be further from the truth. My students are respectful, kind, competitive, and tolerant of each other's differences. They are high spirited, proud of their backgrounds, and deserve the best education that can be provided. Unfortunately, our Title I budget has been reduced due to more schools qualifying for Title I funds since the recession. Title I monies are dispersed based on the household income of students and now a larger population in the suburbs of Atlanta qualify for these additional monies which means that the pot has to be shared and this has crippled our supply budget. Despite this, I want my students to still be able to have the best quality, most engaging materials.
