Our school is a small, rural school in Marion, Alabama of approximately 300 students. The student body is 100 %African American. Approximately 95% of our students participate in the federal Lunch Program. My classroom consists of approximately 150 students from low-income high poverty communities. Although approximately 90% of the parental representation of our student body are not college graduates, the community members value education. Our school and community grapple with many of the challenges that face public, rural, low-income schools. Not all of the families are able to support the basic supply needs that are associated with the classrooms. Teachers struggle to make up for the missing supplies out of their own pockets. However, quite often even this is not enough. We want 100% of our students to attain the skills needed to ensure that they are college and career ready.
