Our middle school has approximately 160 sixth grade students. Our school is very rural, having an approximate population of 10,000 people. For many of my students, this novel is the first opportunity they have to learn about many things: a different country, lifestyle, religion, persecution, war, bravery, and history. This year we had to reduce our overall budget by $1.4 million dollars, and this has been an ongoing problem for several years. As a result, our books are worn out, and without a new set of books, I will not be able to use this novel next year. I teach many things using this novel: fiction story elements, characterization, figurative language, mood/atmosphere, sensory imaging, humility, history, equality, bias, plot, and much, much more. My students love this novel and enjoy reading it! It is definitely a resource that I cannot live without in my classroom. Students who have read this novel find a reason to read - they learn to love reading because the novel speaks to them.
