Our school is in a small rural community. It's the type of small town where everyone knows each other and Friday night football games are filled with community families. They are kind children who always look out for each other. Rarely, do we have school fights. It is, however, a community where families struggle financially. We have about 300 students in our school. Many of our students receive free or reduced meals. Many are behind several grades in reading and math skills. We struggle with convincing them of the importance of learning because they come from families where education is not a priority. I find the greatest success with science topics they can become passionate about. This year, they loved learning about how humans negatively affect ecosystems and became very determined to help animals. On their own, they created a presentation and campaign for the entire school. These are students who need to feel that they are important to our world. It's when they shine!
