My school is an urban core school with all the typical problems, and joys, that come with a poverty ridden area. Our children live mostly in rental homes, apartments, hotels, and homeless shelters but we are, essentially a "neighborhood" school. A typical day, for me, is working with about 125 to 130 different students, 5 to 13 years of age, from 18 different countries with at least as many different languages and dialects. We have a high turnover rate with children coming and going and, often, returning again. Many of our students come to us, the day after relocation to our city, from years in refugee camps. Often they have no English language at all. My class is one in which they can observe and copy what we are doing and this allows them to assimilate on a level they cannot quickly achieve in a regular classroom. Here, with a chance to actually move and work/play with others, they can begin to feel acceptance without needing words and, therefore, not be so socially isolated.
