I teach in a dual-language kindergarten classroom that's made up of about 50% native English and native Spanish speakers every year. The English speaking families are excited for their children to learn Spanish and excel in academics, but my Spanish speaking families often lack the resources to start successfully. They are typically lower academically, partly because they don't read at home as much as their counterparts. They all learn together in my classroom, and help each other out in both languages. They are 5-6 years old and most have not been in preschool so they are all learning school and social expectations. My school is the sister school of another, more established dual-language school in my district. My school has one dual-language class in each grade level, and our school library is lacking in Spanish literature. But we ALWAYS manage to stay positive and support each other!
