My school is a Title 1 school which means that more than 40 percent of my students come from low income homes. That doesn't stop them from learning! My class is made up of very active and enthusiastic group of five and six year olds. They work hard every day to become better readers, writers and mathematicians. They amaze me in their willingness to persevere. This year in centers I noticed that many of my students were struggling to work together and stay engaged in their literacy activities. Some students were frustrated with the writing activities because they have not developed the strong fine motor skills to be successful. As I added in more play based activities that targeted the skills they are lacking, their fine motor, social and language skills increased. Having a variety of activities and materials available to my students will allow them to continue to work daily on these necessary skills.
