Students are being asked to learn at a faster pace with longer focus times. Instilling a love of reading not only opens the door for entertainment, but the way these children will have to learn for the rest of their lives. The texts only get harder and longer as students age. By hearing someone read a book to them that they might otherwise not be able to read on their own opens a door where I can then converse with them, or they can share with a friend a new book character or story line that may reach them in a way that nothing else can! Many students in my class came into 2nd grade reading well below their expected level based on state standards. Giving these students an opportunity to hear, see, and follow along with stories that are too difficult to read and comprehend on their own gives them a chance to feel equal with their peers when having a literacy discussion.
