The school to be impacted is a public school for third and fourth grade students. There are 633 students currently enrolled. This community of approximately nine thousand people has traditionally worked together to provide job opportunities as well as family oriented activities. Fundraisers and volunteer work are relied upon greatly to support the school. Of the 633 students, 471 receive free or reduced lunch. Most recent state testing scores revealed an overall low achievement in the area of math and science inquiry. Despite the low achievement in science inquiry and math, my students have a desire to learn more and love to participate in hands-on activities. I feel that by using the STEM model (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) this year, my students test scores will soar and they will gain the confidence they need to be successful.
