Currently my students work in small groups for literacy. All students need challenging conversations around books, social studies and science. While some need to continue learning letters and corresponding sounds as well. When not in a teacher led group, students participate in a range of activities including self-selected reading to build their knowledge and ability to read nonfiction text for key details (ELA.RI.2.1). My 2nd graders want to know about the world around them. They scour the shelves for books containing engaging pictures and high-interest science topics. They enjoy the current FOSS curriculum and hands-on science activities, but they crave to know more. By providing students with these carefully selected, beautiful nonfiction books, students will feed their quest for knowledge. Cognitive science shows us that children become better readers the more background knowledge they acquire. Rich book choices engage students in reading throughout the day to help bridge knowledge gaps created by instruction during Covid.
