I am teaching in an inner city school, and am working with remedial readers. Some of them are 4 years behind with their reading development. Along with direct instruction and the implementation of skills and strategies, I would like to provide students with a comfortable spot to read. Right now, metal or wooden chairs are all we have. Since my students are already resistant to picking up a book-- I am hoping that the comfortable seating will encourage them to at least try. Once they try-- I'm hoping they find a book, author, genre that they like and will continue to read throughout the course. I teacher 160 students throughout this school year. My class sizes are capped at 12, so these 12 beanbags will be helping 160 students over the course of this school year. These are great kids that struggle all day long due to lack of reading skills. They deserve a comfortable stop to practice what we go over in direct instruction, and a comfortable place to learn to read.
