I am a first year teacher who just graduated in December. I teach Special Education students in grades 3-5. My students have various disabilities ranging from Specific learning disabilities in Reading and Math to students with dyslexia and autism. My schools philosophy is teaching kids through inquiry. The inquiry approach gives students the opportunity to explore their learning making the teacher the guide not the facilitator in the classroom. I believe in this philosophy because its the best way to teach my students with special needs. During a typical school day I see 21 students that are at different levels and have different needs. Teaching all these students can be challenging if you teach the same way, using the same resources, and expecting them to get the material and move on. The inquiry approach gives me the flexibility to differentiate and use a variety of resources to teach each student at their level. The key to their success is having me guide them in their learning.
