My classroom consists of 6 children, ages 8-9, with autism. Each child is extremely unique and special, and no child in my class is on the exact same grade level academically or socially. I emphasize the importance of social skills, life skills, communicating with others, and using verbal words to communicate - while at the same time teaching the children to read and write, to focus, and remain engaged during group and 1:1 lessons. My students are becoming more and more social, using more words to communicate, and are very excited and aware of their progress. Students will often jump up and down in excitement after reading a sentence correctly. Others will look for a big hug -after using words to communicate. My students are making such amazing progress regardless of their disabilities. They all suffer from speech impairments, and we are working together to makes strides in their communication skills. Our school is a loving place, determined to make a difference.
