The children in my classroom love to read and write. They move to the carpet, they gather in circles, they get cozy with pillows. The traditional desks and tables sometimes get in the way of reading with a partner or sharing their writing. They need the ability to move tables and chairs to help them be creative in their learning. Children take control of their learning when they can control their environment. If I want my students to have a voice - then they need to feel like the classroom is theirs to rearrange and manipulate. If they feel like they can do that - without asking me - then they will see themselves as learners who are in charge of their learning.
