Our school is in a low socioeconomic part of our county. The other areas of the county are much more affluent. Because of this wide socioeconomic gap, our students don't always get the small things that other schools take for granted with their plentiful PTO volunteers and their donations. Our students have little knowledge of the outside world when they begin school, because their parents are not able to pay for child care. We literally get a blank slate with some children. This has its advantages of course, but also disadvantages. Our school is small (about 250 students K-5), but our faculty and staff genuinely love and care for these students the 6 years they are here. Every teacher knows just about every child on a first name basis which creates a wonderful, safe environment for the children.
