My school is an urban school that is located very close to the city and most of my students come from a low socio-economic household. Due to low self-esteem, their performance is not to the standard. Besides all the help school/teachers provide, it becomes unattainable goal to move them up. Due to low expectations at home, students have tendency to show low motivation in structured setting. Since 97% of the students fall under African American race, there is not much diversity in the school. Sense of competition lacks when it comes to academic performance in math and science. Students learn better manipulatively rather than traditional methods. To keep young minds moving, teachers have to come up with creative ways to keep them busy. I am consistent with them and believe that they can achieve anything they desire as long as they can work hard. With positive reinforcement students are getting involved in school.
