Do you remember the time in elementary school where you transitioned from short stories to full-blown chapter books? My curious and insightful fifth graders are making that transition now--and learning to love literature in the process. Many of my students are struggling readers, and successfully conquering a "grown-up" chapter book builds their confidence as a reader. It has been a pleasure watching my fifth graders shed tears over the familial tragedies in books like Esperanza Rising and become outraged over the blatant racism in Jerry Spinelli's Maniac Magee. These budding readers need more high-quality books! My students live in a high-poverty area; please consider helping me purchase novel sets that will deepen their love of reading.
