Every year, my Drawing students explore drawing with charcoal materials culminating in charcoal portraits. Many students are initially daunted by the new medium, but all students work through their trepidation and end up creating amazing portraits. Each student will check-out a charcoal kit for drawing at home and will check-in unused materials when we return to face to face instruction. Since one set of materials normally serves four classes of students, the returned individual materials will provide enough charcoal media to serve next years' students as well. Nothing will be wasted! "I never thought I would be able to draw like that!," so many students exclaim. Creating successful charcoal portraits prepares students for college level classes like AP Drawing and IB Art, encourages them to see themselves as "real" artists, and most of all, empowers them with the confidence to tackle what initially seems impossible.
