I teach at Simon Gratz Mastery Charter, located in Nicetown, Philadelphia. Our neighborhood we serve is among one of the most violent and impoverished in the entire city. We are a charter school who has taken over a previous public school, but kept it as an open enrollment neighborhood high school. Our students struggle daily with math and reading, ranging anywhere from 1st - 12th grade levels. Most students deal with challenges outside of school other than homework, so we as teachers try to provide a support system for them all. Despite bumps along the road, we have created a large 9th grade family.
