It's harder than ever to convince kids that our lesson is more interesting than the reason their phone just vibrated. However, I've found that nearly any activity that doesn't include paper and a pen can do the trick. Whiteboards have proven to be a versatile and effective tool in creating variety in my lesson plans and in keeping my students tuned in. Whether it's a quick verb review or a game in rows, the whiteboards allow each student to be actively involved and accountable. Also, they serve as the perfect formative assessment to take the class's comprehension temperature. And they love them!
