I teach about 90 seventh and eighth grade English language arts students at a small, low-income, k-8 school in Portland, Oregon. The school serves a small neighborhood in a larger city. Most students walk to school and it is not out of the ordinary to find a handful of students, or more, hanging out with their teachers after school on a Friday afternoon. For many of my students, our school is a huge part of their life as many of them have attended since kindergarten. My students are a respectful and curious group of learners who are hungry for knowledge. Our school has implemented the MindUP program, which teaches students valuable social-emotional skills. For students who often come from lives with some sort of trauma at some point in their life, these are invaluable skills that will help them navigate their lives. Although our school is small, we are mighty.
