My students are a wonderful mix of ages from 5-8 grade. They join performing arts to experience being in the play, little realizing they are not only in the play, but also the designers and creators. We spend a lot of time in design work and the students are excited to see their design become reality as they fabricate their individual ideas. Working with all types of supplies from corrugated plastic to PVC pipe, the students learn to paint, sew, glitter, and manipulate our supplies into sets, costumes, and props. They take great pride in seeing their work come to life and are especially proud to see their stuff reused in multiple productions. The classroom gives them a chance to collaborate with each other and create sets and costumes that enhance their own characters. Our classroom is a magical place where we really do create illusions that are are truly our own reality. Because the students work from initial design work to curtain call, they become attached and proud of their work.
