The students are a good-natured bunch. Many come from under-privileged homes, yet they come to school ready to learn and excited for the opportunities that our school offers. Our school is very challenging with many learning goals. First grade students need to know 220 sight words by the end of the year, read 60 words or more, and know all math facts, both subtraction and addition. Our school is preparing all students for the rigorous curriculum of junior high, high school, and college. We teach the students to be "mini college students" by proving answers in the texts they read. They are expected to not only provide answers, but give reasoning for their answers. They are taught test-taking strategies and many upper-level skills. Our school believes all the students can be challenged.
