I am the only school counselor at 2 elementary schools in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. Between my 2 schools I work with over 1,000 students. My students are just like many students in the nation, navigating the school setting, working out problems and building their characters as they grow up. They need to know how to navigate so many situations, find their own voices and to understand who they are. Many of my students spend their day in crisis dealing with such things as loss of a family member, serious illness, child abuse, divorce, self-esteem, eating disorders, self-harming behaviors, bullying, etc. They come to school knowing it is a safe place and I am one of their safe adults to help them process all that is going on. To be able to see my students leave with a smile and know someone cares & values their thoughts & feelings is my goal everyday.
