I work at a high school with students who receive Special Education Services. I provide their counseling services. Many students struggle with coming to see a counselor at school. Some are embarrassed, some feel to hopeless to come in, others are too shy. I've had some students tell me there is no way they will see a therapist. I tell them they never have to see me if they don't want to. When I provide a very relaxing, pleasant environment, though, many students seek out to see me. Snacks and fidgets are an important part of that. It may seem silly, but many of these students were very reluctant to meet with someone until they saw what my office can offer. They come for the "snacks" and stay to have meaningful conversations about their lives. These kids are struggling. It's so hard to see how the pandemic has affected them. So many feel overwhelmed. I want to do whatever I can to help encourage these students to seek help.
