The wonderful students I work with come from several different low-income towns within the township. All the students at the school have a primary educational diagnosis of Emotional Disturbance or Behavioral Disorder. The "regular" education schools they come from have found that they cannot manage these students safely which just means these students need extra love and support to succeed both academically and socially. Alternative schools often are misperceived as "holding" centers or places for the "bad" kids. None of the students at our school are "bad" kids. Sure, some make poor decisions or present with concerning behaviors, but what I have found are that the kids who draw the most attention to themselves are the ones who are crying out because they do not feel seen, heard, cared for, loved or important. Because healing the internal wounds of these students is my top priority, I am currently pursuing a second masters degree in child therapy so I can offer the best treatment.
