I teach 1st grade in a small charter school. Our particular charter is to include arts education alongside the standard elementary/middle school curriculum. Many of our students come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds; well over half of our student body qualify for free or reduced-priced lunches. My classroom is run with an emphasis on experiential learning. Kids complete numerous projects that have the education standards embedded. We are lucky to have a wetlands area at the base of our school campus. The area is rich in flora and fauna, so the 1st grade California science standards which focus on habitat, adaptation, and environmental/human impact can be covered in a direct, hands-on manner.
