Greetings All! I teach band in Charlotte, North Carolina at a Title I Middle School serving grades 6-8. We are a school undergoing a population transition due to newly drawn school boundary lines and will eventually lose our Title I status. Many of our students have financial challenges that make it hard to support and help maintain a highly functioning instrumental music program. We do not receive much funding from the school or the district. Typically, support comes in the manner of having a few instruments repaired (which we have to prioritize) and through a small amount of money (generally $200.00) for “small goods” purchases. On average it costs about 10 to 15 thousand dollars annually to support an active band program. Needs often include new music purchases, replacement/repair of instruments, performance/travel fees for MPA and Honors Band, field trips, new technology, and the replacement of old equipment.
