Students in my classroom are receiving special education services through the severe special needs program due to a wide-range of disabilities including autism, low-cognition, Down Syndrome, etc. While all of my students are working on communication skills their abilities to effectively communicate are as diverse as they are. Some are learning to communicate appropriately in social situations while others struggle to express their basic wants and needs. I believe that one student in particular is not meeting his full potential academically due to his inability to communicate effectively with teachers as well as peers.
