My students are from an impoverished inner city area. The school is about 90% Hispanic, 8% African American and 2% other. They are from mostly single parent households with parents that have not have a chance at an education themselves. The school that we are in is an oasis in their neighborhood. It is a beautiful new building which provides a safe haven for the students. They respect and appreciate the building and act accordingly. The children are developing an attitude through encouragement that shows they have developed a thirst for knowledge. Many times the children tell me that they do not have books at home to read. For this reason it is very important that they have a good library in the classroom to read books and to borrow books.
