My school is located in the Bronx, in a low-income neighborhood, and it services recent immigrant young adults. Nearly all of the school's 350 students receive a free lunch, breakfast, and school uniforms. They have little financial means to support a healthy, active lifestyle such as participation in baseball. Many of my students come from the Dominican Republic or Mexico and are fond of baseball. Unfortunately, participation in this sport costs more than the school can provide (the sporting budget is spent on umpires and field permits), and much more than the students can afford. Baseball bats are expensive equipment items that students need in order to participate. It would help immensely to be able to provide baseball bats to the student-athletes.
