This project will provide tools so students can sort letters and letter sounds, create letters in different modalities, and start building words. The Play-Dough and silicone mats will let students feel how letters are shaped, while the tiles, games, magnets, and dice will encourage students to sort letters and blend letter sounds. The laminator will allow me to create tools for our literacy centers (such as sight word sorting games) that match our current unit and are durable. Hands-on exploration is important for emerging readers. Most students do not learn best by listening to the teacher, but by creating meaning and solving problems for themselves. Our students need these tools to become expert readers and build a love of learning.
