I teach in a high poverty, high mobility elementary school located in an urban community in the Midwest. The percentage of children that receive free lunch (a indication of children living in poverty) varies from month to month, but is consistently above 85%. In addition, our school has a mobility rate that hovers around 40%. 40% of our students will move into or out of our school at some point during the school year. Due to these factors, my class size fluctuates between 18 to 24 students. Most of their parents lack the skills and the resources to provide what their children need to be successful. These children come to me with high needs - not just for academics, but for social and emotional needs as well. This is where I come in. I strive to be a pillar of stability and provide our children with what they need while they are with me.
