I have a very active class and they constantly ask me if they can work on the carpet or stand up. Like all teachers, I have kids that just can't stay in their seats. They just have to move all day long. I have done a lot of research about flexible seating and found that it can transform the classroom learning environment by implementing it throughout the day. This is my second school year using flexible seating. The more I implement it the better the results and student engagement I get from them. My students need more flexible seating options in our classroom. We would like to have 4 wobble chairs, two balance balls, and a comfy chair to read and work where they feel more comfortable and productive. There are many benefits of flexible seating: burning of calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, improving core strength, overall posture, etc. In addition, flexible seating helps my students become more self-aware of what types of seating helps them learn best and they become empowered by the opportunity of having choices. Right now, I am in the process of giving my students options to select where they want to work during center time. Allowing students to be involved in their learning gives them the tools to be much more successful.
