The great majority of my students, over 95%, are African-American, urban, and all qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Poverty and violence are the norm for most of my kids. Education is not a high priority when survival is the primary concern, and yet, as a teacher I can see the desire to learn and the spark of enthusiasm when information, in my case literature, grabs their interest. My charges exhibit the same desires and frustrations about their lives, their places in the world, and their futures that all teenagers exhibit. My students want to go to college. They want to participate in the society. They desperately want a future, a future that is not like the present they live in. They want a high school that is not guarded by police and that does not create anxiety and is not fraught with violence. My students want it all and are frustrated when the district cannot provide them with books every high school student in American has and reads. Who cares about these kids? I do!
